I was six years old and we were moving to Germany from North Carolina. My dad was already there so it was just my mom, our two cats and me. Something got all mixed up and mom and I ended up not sitting together. I sat in an isle seat and she sat by a window. The guy who sat next to her refused to change seats with me. Thankfully, the people next to me were all really nice and they kind of watched over me. For a six-year old, not being able to sit next to your mom on a trip to your new house was terrifying, at least for me. Do you find this valuable?

RE: My worst air-travel nightmare was...LIMA, PERU

My friend and I stayed at the airport hotel purposely because my flight to Cusco, from Lima, was at 6am. We thought it was great because we could roll-out of bed and be on the plane. We had our tickets and just needed to turn in our baggage...it wasn't so easy. We arrived at the gate at 5am to be told we were too late and couldn't get on the plane. We were very confused because we had our tickets! They ended up telling us they "overbooked" the plane and we had to wait until the next day (only 1 flight/day) to go to Cusco! To make it worse, they gave the 12 people in front of us, who were there before 5am free hotel, transportation, and food, and left me and my friend with NOTHING! We were forced to get on another, much better airline--LAN! We ended up making it to Cuzco that day, after about 8 hours of hassle and having to dish out an extra $100 to get on the other flight! The moral of this story, find out if your airline is sketchy and overbooks flights and how early you need to be there. We were "suppose" to be there at 4am, we found out, in order to get on that plane. Do you find this valuable?

I actually have two for you guys. The first was in May of 2003 when my sister and I went to Puerto Vallarta to attend a cousin's wedding. Our flight was scheduled to leave at 6 a.m. We were to fly to Dallas, switch planes and then onto Mexico! When we got to the airport (we live in KC and I absolutely love that airport!!) and got in line I looked over to make sure our plane was leaving on time and our flight had the word CANCELLED beside it!!! I turned to my sister to tell her this and she looked over in both shock and anger. She had checked our flight to make sure it was leaving on time just an hour before we left the house. Turns out there was a problem with the plane that was taking us to Dallas so she grounded it in Phoenix. It took a little over an hour to get on another flight but the gal at the reservation desk felt so bad for us she put us in first class for the trip from Dallas to Puerto Vallarta. The first and only time I've been in first class and let me tell you, the meals are much better!! Actual plates and silverware! Of course since I'm not a wine drinker I gave my glass to my sister, which she didn't mind at all!! By that time we all needed a drink!
The second story was a year earlier over Mother's Day weekend in 2002. My sister and I took our dad out to see our older sister in Virginia. While we were flying into Norfolk, our plane started to descend and then all of a sudden the pilot jerked the plane back up. I seriously thought that was it for us! He said there was a slight problem that he had to attend to but that everything was fine and we would land without any problems. Yeah. Right. The slight problem was a small private plane that flew too close under our plane and he had to jerk upwards in order to avoid crashing into it! Never want to experience that ever, ever again!!!!

Checked in, things looked good.
I had an 1 1/2 hour wait in Newark, so it was important for my flight to
leave Austin on time. The Newark airport is big and can take a long time finding
the next gate.
I called my Mom on my and told her everything looks like it will
go smoothly. Only moments after, I over heard a couple saying they now have to re
book their flight because the flight to Newark can be an hour or more late. I went
right up to the check in counter, and what do you know. In red blinking letters
it said delayed! I stayed calm because this is a part of traveling and getting upset
will not change a thing.
I walked up to the counter to re book. The woman was slow and stood there
for thirty minutes getting my flight solved. My flight would have been so easy.
Only a change in Newark and then right to Berlin. But now my flight was changed
from Newark, then Frankfurt, and I really hate that airport. Wait apx. three hours,
then go to Berlin. I would arrive to Berlin seven hours late from my original arrival.
The flight was one hour late to Newark and that would mean I would have
only thirty minutes to get to the gate if I kept my original flight. The plane must
have flown faster than ever because it arrived to Newark only fifteen minutes late!
It made up time! But I already changed my ticket!! I felt like I was on "Amazing
Race" running around the Newark airport finding out where I can change my ticket
back! I asked someone, and she said to get to gate 90, and near there is a ticket
counter for things like that. Great! I got lost but did find it
and walked right up to the counter. No lines. I told the woman what happened and
she said no problem, she can change my ticket back to the way it was. Thank you!
I still had some time to get to the gate, not far from 90.
Good ending at least!

We landed in Denver in 1981 at the old airport during the Christmas rush, headed for Detroit (I'm so bad I vacation i Detroit!). The outside temperature was -20F in the daytime, so cold that the ramp people could not work for more than a few minutes. Also, it had snowed heavily just before the cold set in, so the roads were almost impassable. Hotels were full and restaurants were running out of food. Fortunately (or unfortunately) there seemed to be plenty of booze. We spent 13 hours there, on the floor in the terminal. I called ahead to tell my parents of our delay, thinking they would not have left to pick us up 3 hours before our arrival (remember, 1981, way before cell phones, and even before answering machines for many people). My elderly parents, unaccustomed to the variables of travel, had indeed left 3 hours early, worried about parking. I tried to contact them various ways to no avail. They spent 13 hours waiting for us, imagining multiple horror stories about why we weren't arriving. When we finally arrived in Detroit at 1 a.m., my mother burst into a screaming sobbing public embarrassment as if I had just returned from the war. Do you find this valuable?

I also was very young when I had my worst airplane ride; it was also my mother's worst airplane ride. My father, mother, and I were in the last group of Americans to be evacuated from The Panama Canal Zone (now known as simply Panama) when the government was taken over by a coup. First off, it was traumatic for me as I had to leave many personal belongings behind. Then, the plane ride was uncomfortable to say the least as we flew on a C130 US Army Cargo plan. Imagine a long plane ride on a canvas "bench" with no back. But, my mother was 8 months pregnant with my younger brother...I think she wins the prize. Do you find this valuable?

"But, my mother was 8 months pregnant with my younger brother...I think she wins the prize."
I took many rides on a C130 when I did a USO tour, and not only do you sit in the back with the cargo, it is LOUD, it is not heated so it is freezing, and you're basically seated in netting. That must have been terrifying for you. I have to agree that your mother wins the prize being 8 months pregnant in that very stressful situation! You're lucky that you got out.
